Jaidev Verma was born in 1919 and brought up in Ludhiana,India. He ran away to Bombay to become a film star at the age of 15 in 1933.He acted in as many as eight films as a child star in Wadia Film Company. At young age,Prof Barkat Rai made him learn music and later when he went to Bombay,he learnt music from Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar. Due to his father's blindness, he had to leave his film career and return back to Ludhiana to take over the responsibility of his family on his young shoulders. Jaidev took the responsiblity of his sister Dev Kumari after his father passed away. He later got her married to Sat-Paul Verma
He left for Lucknow in 1943 to study under the guidance of music maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. In 1951, Ali Akbar Khan took Jaidev as his music assistant when he composed music for Navketan's 'Aandhiyan' and 'Hum Safar'. With 'Taxi Driver' film,he became assistant to legendary music composer S.D.Burman. His first break as a full fledged music director came with Chetan Anand's film Joru Ka Bhai(1955) followed by Chetan Anand's next Anjali (1957) both of these films became very popular.

It was with the film Navketan's Hum Dono(1961) that Jaidev came into the limelight and got his talent recognised with some classic songs like 'Allah tero naam...' , 'Abhi na jaao chorkar...' , 'Main zindagi ka saath...' , 'Kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe...'.
His another big success came with Sunil Dutt starrer Mujhe Jeene Do(1963). Many of Jaidev films flopped at boxoffice but flims like Hum Dono(1961), Kinare Kinare(1963), Reshma Aur Shera(1972), Aalap(1977) and Ankahee(1984) are still remembered for the imaginative musical score by Jaidev. One of the major or unique quality of Jaidev was that he could mix traditional and folk music into bollywood film situations distinguishing himself from the likes of other music directors of that time.

Jaidev Verma never won any filmfare award but he had the honour to win the national award and that too three times. He won it 1st time for the Music Direction of Reshma Aur Shera(1972). He won it 2nd time for the Music Direction of Gaman(1979). Lastly, he won it for the Music Direction of Ankahee(1985).
Jaidev never got married though he remained very close to her sister's family, who later settled in UK. At the age of 68, he died on 6th Jan,1987 in Bombay, Maharashtra.
Jaidev was famous for his simplicity mixed with eccentricity. And in later days he even stopped wearing footwear and this fact is just a glimpse of his mystical personality.
